Fits Like A Glove

Later, at the end of his career playing with Kansas City, Sam Esposito and Hawk Harrelson were great friends and golfing buddies. Hawk was a rookie. Sam was at the end of his career rarely played. They decided, on this incredibly hot afternoon in KC, to play nine extra holes of golf. When they came into the clubhouse, Hawk, who had been warming the bench with Sam all year, was shocked to see his name in the starting lineup.  His hands were so blistered from the golf that he couldn’t hold a bat. So, Sam sent him to the trunk of his car for his golf gloves.  Harrelson took batting practice with one on each hand (being hooted by the visiting Yankees).  Hawk wore them during the game, hit a couple out, and never stopped wearing what has now---thanks to a former bench warmer---become known to fans as simply, The Batting Glove.
